The history of Hotel Nongshim began with the establishment of the “Dongnae Tourist Hotel”, the first modern facility for overnight lodging located south of Seoul's Han River. Initially funded by the founder's personal fortune, the foundations for what would become the Youlchon Foundation were laid in 1978, when the foundation's basis was expanded to KRW 400 million to encompass university and graduate students.
In 1984, Nongshim president Chun Ho Shin became the chair of the board and donated a fortune amounting to KRW 8 billion to the foundation, setting the stage for the foundation's growth to KRW 15.2 billion today. This act of generosity allowed the foundation to expand its scholarship programs to include academic research support, research organization support, publishing and distribution, and natural education support for adolescents.
Youlchon Foundation successfully developed a Korean language textbook for all levels after 10 years of research. This textbook was then adapted for English and Japanese speakers in a CD-ROM format, providing valuable opportunity for local recipients of the KOREAN LAB website, children of the Korean diaspora, and Korean learners across the globe, giving them a chance to learn the Korean language and culture in an accessible format.
